My latest fic on Ao3.

Celebrimbor, Idril, and Elrond chat in Valinor over tea.

1800 words, rated G, no warnings apply. Just some cousins catching up / getting to know each other in the fourth age.Basically fluff, though it ends on a kind of down note.

Guess what! It's feeling sad about Elrond time!
Specifically, Earendil's star is also called Gil-Estel, 'star of hope'
Because it was a sign that the Valar were actually paying attention to Middle Earth, and that you could leave Middle Earth, and it heralded their army coming, and he slew Ancalagon
But that's not how Elrond sees it
When the star first rose, he knew that his mother was very far away and wasn't coming back anytime soon
And then he learned that it was both his parents and they were never coming back
And if course the Silmaril is the thing that Maedhros and Maglor destroyed his town for, and later abandoned him for
So Elrond's association with Gil-Estel is 'a sign the people I love are gone forever'
People probably tell Elrond how nice it is that his father brings hope to so many people
He isn't going to ruin a good thing for everyone else, and gives a polite thank you.

Earendil knows he's a sign of hope and tries to shine brighter and longer when his kids are going through tough times

When Elros dies, Earendil shines brighter than the moon from the first moment the sky tints pink to the last blush of dawn leaving.
He wants to show that he cares, that he is paying attention, to remind Elrond that he's not alone
Elrond really wants to go hide in a cave.

Elwing knew that she would fly the moment she stepped from her tower.
It wasn't Ulmo’s grace that saved her, but Luthien’s.

Elrond is the greatest healer in Middle Earth because starting at age six gives you a lot of practice.

Killing people diminishes your healing ability. There is literally no one in the Feanorian host who can heal after Sirion.

Warning for the read more: children in traumatic situations, child justifying his existence, child injury, sad

Fic about the aftermath of Sirion )

It never says in the Silmarillion that Elrond and Elros were sent to Gil-Galad. What if they stayed with the sons of Feanor all the way until the end?

  • The last two remaining Sons of Feanor attacked the hosts of Valinor in the middle of the night, and Eonwe let them leave.
  • But not everyone is fine with the mass murderers getting of scot-free.
  • Some people follow the path that the brothers took out of camp.
  • Others try to track where they came from. Presumably they would circle back, and it’s not like anyone’s been sharing info with the Feanorians. There might still be an entire army out there.
  • Following the trail shows that there is not an army.
  • (The army left bit by bit over the decades, some going east across the mountains, some joining kin on Balar, many killed by orcs.)
  • There are two tents and four horses around a campfire.
  • The smaller tent is unoccupied, but when investigated has bedrolls and such for two people.
  • The larger tent is occupied.

Tolkien went with the most boring outcome possible for Elrond and Elros at the end of the First Age. Consider instead:

  • King Elrond of the Sindar and his brother King Elros of the Edain
  • King Elrond of the Noldor (if Gil-Galad is Ordoreth’s son, Earendil has a better claim)
  • King Elrond of ALL the elves in Middle Earth, Noldor and Sindar
  • Triple King Elros of the Sindar, Noldor, and Edain
  • Elrond and Elros claiming they have a psychic bond, and therefore they’re both Triple-King
    • No one knows what maia-human-elven twins grow up like, so no one can dispute it
  • One of them going to Valinor and arguing that he should be king of Tirion instead of Finarfin
    • Also trying to get counted as a prince of Aqualonde, because they’re Olwe’s nephews.
  • One of them going sailing with their dad Earendil for a few centuries, hanging out in Valinor afterwards, comforting Grandma Melian as she waits for Thingol to be reborn
  • Elrond saying “I don’t want to be a Man, but I won’t be an Elf either. I choose to be a Maia, like Melian.”
    • I have no idea what happens when there’s suddenly another one of the beings that existed as long as creation, but I bet he shakes things up.
    • Elrond becoming herald of Ulmo and herald of Yavanna, then lording it over Eonwe
    • Probably results in Elrond fighting Sauron in hand-to-hand combat and winning
  • Just checked, and they were allowed to ‘choose freely to which kindred their fates shall be joined.’ No mention made of blood ties.
    • I’m saying Dwarf!Elros and Maia!Elrond
    • And Elros somehow ends up king of the dwarves, possibly by flaunting his adoptive descent from Feanor, the greatest craftsman in history
