( Read more... )How old is that elf?
Feb. 16th, 2019 11:08 pmWhen everyone’s happy and reborn in Fourth Age Valinor, I bet there’s a lot of debate about what age everyone actually is. The points of view:
- Calculating the equivalent number of sun-years you were alive for before the sun rose, plus how many sun-years you lived your first life, plus how many years since you got out of Mandos
- The same but rounding so 1 tree-year = 10 sun-years rather than 9 years 212 days 18 hours
- Calculating how many equivalent sun-years it’s been since you were born, even if you were dead for half the time
- Calculating how many tree-years it’s been since you were born
- Any of the above but with whatever calendar Beleriand was using before the sun rose
- Number of years since you got out of Mandos
- “How many birthdays have I been alive for?”
- Since you had been born but were not alive, the years in Mandos should be subtracted, potentially leaving you with a negative age
- The age you died at, and refusing to acknowledge ever getting older
- Just giving up and saying “older than the sun yet younger than the stars”
Elven night vision
Dec. 28th, 2018 10:14 pmHeadcanon: Although Calaquendi are overall taller, stronger, and in better shape due to being exposed to Treelight, they have worse night vision. Sindarin and Avarin elves can see things clearly with no more light then the stars drifting through the treetops, but an Aman-born Noldo has could see only slightly better than a Man.
This means there were probably quite a few survivors from Doriath, as although the Feanorian army was more experienced, they didn’t know their way around the caves of Menegroth and couldn’t see beyond the torches the carried with them.
